The Landscape of AI Writing ToolsWith all the positive and negative hype about AI for creating visual and textual content, I figured I’d share with you my take on how to safely use AI in your writing.

In short, my review of the landscape of AI writing tools to elevate your storytelling.

I won’t talk about “prompt engineering,” but the overall workflow you should consider.

Lay of the land

As you’ve seen, in the past two years since ChatGPT was launched a tidal wave of new text-to-text AI tools emerged for various writing purposes.

You can largely divide the landscape into three distribution categories.

Small players offer their products via the Web, mobile app, desktop app, and a Chrome extension. And the big players leverage their huge user traction and offer on-deck solutions.

The Landscape of AI Writing Tools

  1. Off-deck tools because you use them outside your main tools. For example, doing research on Perplexity and then writing your story on Google Docs.
  1. On-deck tools are core platforms like Google, Canva, Zoom, Microsoft, or Apple that integrate native text-to-text AI tools right into their apps, email, search engines, or mobile devices – as is the case with the latest Apple Intelligence on iPhone 16.
  2. On-deck apps/extensions external tools like Grammarly you install on your desktop, browser, or mobile device. Then whatever writing app you use you’ll have your AI assistant in the background.

Learn more about the above 3 categories, the pros and cons of using AI writing tools, my tips cheat sheet, what I do, and a look at what’s ahead.
