In the past decade, infographics and data visualizations have become part of the toolkit of any communication worker in journalism, marketing, P.R., etc. New and powerful software tool have enabled an increasing amount of people to begin producing data charts and maps. However, this has not been accompanied by a deeper understanding of the core principles of the visual display of information. This session will cover these key elementary principles.

Knight Chair in Visual Journalism

Alberto Cairo is the Knight Chair in Visual Journalism at the University of Miami, where he teaches courses on infographics and data visualization. He is also director of the Visualization program of UM’s Center for Computational Science, and Visualization Innovator in Residence at Univisión, besides being a consultant for companies like Google and Microsoft. He is the author of the books The Functional Art: An Introduction to Information Graphics and Visualization (2012) and The Truthful Art: Data, Charts, and Maps for Communication, which has just been published.
